• One-time Washington Senators catcher and a secret agent for Franklin Roosevelt and William Donovan.
• Dubbed "Professor Berg" by newspaper columnists and teammates; enjoyed studying and speaking foreign languages as much as snagging pop flies over home plate.
• Curious about all things scientific; taught himself enough about physics to understand how atoms can be split to create energy; became one of America's foremost atomic spies during World War II.
• Called baseball's Renaissance man.
Snagging Pop Flies and Spies
Following her undercover work in World War II, she became one of the CIA's first female operatives.
Virginia Hall broke glass ceilings to become one of this country's most productive and respected operatives.
Virginia Hall's legacy was largely lost until only recently. In many respects, that is the hallmark of a good and conscientious intelligence professional.
Half a century later her story is surfacing from declassified government records and from the personal recollections of her former colleagues, both male and female, who still marvel at the accomplishments of the "Limping Lady of the OSS."
The Germans so respected and feared her that they tried repeatedly to capture her--many times while the woman with the wooden leg worked under their noses.
She became the first female civilian to receive this country's second highest military award for bravery after the Medal of Honor.
